The GSFA Bishops Formation Retreat began today, 14th July, at the Church of Uganda’s Lweza Training and Conference centre with a powerful sermon by the Chairman, Archbishop Justin Badi, Primate of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan.
During the opening service of Evensong, he encouraged the bishops to be like lighthouses, saying that while a lighthouse does not stop the storm, but it guides ships safely through the danger. Referring to the motto text of the retreat, John 15:5, he warned that the greatest danger is to ignore Jesus’ warning ‘apart from me you can do nothing’.

The challenge not to lose connection with Christ is both personal and for the whole Anglican Communion. Rather than being swayed by false ideologies and the temptations that come with hardship and poverty, the ministry of a bishop should be marked by a ‘calm confidence in Christ’.
This is the fourth Bishops Formation Retreat to be held by the GSFA since they were initiated in 2024. In attendance are bishops and their spouses from Burundi, Ghana, South Sudan and Madagascar.
